Litter smell is the number-one complaint of cat owners, especially in apartments. The good news: the right litter, box and routine can make it almost disappear. Here’s how to pick each, and the setup that keeps things fresh.

Choosing the litter

Clumping clay

The most popular choice. Good clumping litter traps urine into solid balls you scoop out daily, removing the smell at source. Look for low-dust, hard-clumping formulas.

Highly absorbent and excellent at controlling odour between changes, great for busy households, though pricier.

Natural (tofu, wood, paper)

Plant-based litters are lighter, often flushable and low-dust. Odour control varies by brand, but many clump well and are gentler on the environment.

Note: most cats prefer unscented litter. Heavy perfumes can put them off the box entirely, let the scooping, not the fragrance, do the odour control.

Choosing the box

• Covered / hooded boxes contain smell and mess and give shy cats privacy, but some cats dislike them, and they can trap odour if not scooped often.
• Open trays are preferred by many cats and easier to keep an eye on.
• Top-entry boxes reduce litter tracking and scatter.
• Self-cleaning boxes scoop automatically, convenient and great for odour, but an investment, and not every cat takes to them.
• Go big. A box at least 1.5× your cat’s body length lets them dig and cover properly.

The setup that actually beats smell

1. Scoop at least once a day, nothing else matters as much as this.
2. One box per cat, plus one spare (the classic rule).
3. Keep a decent depth of litter (5-7 cm) so it can absorb and clump.
4. Full change and wash on a regular schedule, weekly for clay, per the pack for crystal/natural.
5. Place boxes in ventilated, quiet spots away from food and water.
6. A litter mat catches tracked litter and keeps the area tidy.

Worth knowing: a sudden change in litter-box habits, going outside the box, straining, or much more/less urine, can signal a health problem. That’s one for your vet, not a new litter.

The bottom line

For most homes, a hard-clumping, low-dust, unscented litter in a generously sized box, scooped daily is the winning combination. Upgrade to crystal or a self-cleaning box if you want longer gaps between scooping. But remember: the best odour control isn’t a product, it’s daily scooping.
